BOSTON -- Jared Sullinger was at a loss to explain how his Boston Celtics could win while committing a season-high 28 turnovers. Jonathan Lucroy Jersey . "I honestly dont know," he said. Try this: 20 points, nine assists and seven rebounds by Rajon Rondo, a 62-37 rebounding advantage by the Celtics and a horrible 4-for-30 shooting performance on 3-pointers by the Nets. The result was a 91-84 victory in which Brooklyn never led and had its four-game winning streak stopped Friday night. The rebounding "was obviously the difference in the game for us, from our standpoint. That, and they missed the 3s," Boston coach Brad Stevens said. "Id like to say that it was this outstanding 3-point defence, but I think when you re-watch it, its a lot of open 3s they missed." The Celtics scored the first five points and won for just the second time in nine games. And they held off Brooklyn after an 11-point run cut the lead to 70-68 with 2:02 left in the third quarter. The Celtics came back to take a 78-70 lead entering the final quarter and led by at least seven points the rest of the way. "We shared the ball pretty well with our team, and theirs," Stevens said after watching the Celtics commit twice as many turnovers as Brooklyn, "so, overall, it was at least a step in the right direction." The Nets were led by Joe Johnson with 21 points and Deron Williams with 20 as they fell back to .500 two days after going over the mark for the first time this season. The Celtics (21-41) were coming off a very poor performance in a 108-88 loss to Golden State on Wednesday night. "We need to keep working, keep grinding and understand we cant take anyone lightly," Nets coach Jason Kidd said. Jason Collins, the NBAs first openly gay player, did not play for the Nets for the first time in seven games since signing a 10-day contract Feb. 23. Collins, who played for the Celtics last season, signed a second 10-day contract Wednesday. The Celtics got 15 points from Jeff Green and 14 from Jerryd Bayless. Sullinger led all rebounders with 12. But Rondo was the key, despite his seven turnovers. Rondo missed the first 40 games recovering from off-season knee surgery and has shown an improved shooting touch recently. He hit three of six 3-pointers Friday. "He did a tremendous job coming into the season working on his jumper constantly," Sullinger said. "Now hes starting to become the Rondo we all know every day." Paul Pierce scored 10 points in his second appearance in Boston since the blockbuster trade that sent him and Kevin Garnett to the Nets in the off-season. Pierce spent 15 seasons with the Celtics after they drafted him with the 10th pick in 1998. He received light applause when he was introduced with the other Nets starters. Garnett missed his fourth straight game with back spasms. "Every time I come into this gym, its going to be emotion. Not like last time, though," Pierce said. "We just didnt have any rhythm on offence or defence." Pierce and Garnett each scored six points in their first game in Boston this season, an 85-79 Brooklyn win Jan. 26. Both were emotional during and after video tributes on the video screen above centre court. On Friday, the Celtics led 53-41 at halftime -- after the Nets missed all 17 of their 3-pointers -- and 70-57 with four minutes left in the third quarter. Brooklyn scored the next 11 points with Shaun Livingston starting the spurt with two free throws and Andray Blatche following with a 3-pointer. Andrei Kirilenko made a three-point play, Marcus Thornton sank a layup and Johnson hit a free throw. Green ended the run with a three-point play, the Celtics led 78-70 entering the fourth quarter and stayed ahead by at least seven the rest of the way. Despite all those turnovers. "I remember Bobby Knight on ESPN said the team that had the most turnovers is going to lose," Sullinger said. "I guess we exceeded that expectation." NOTES: Celtics C Vitor Faverani will miss the rest of the season after having arthroscopic surgery on his left knee to repair a torn lateral meniscus on Friday. ... Pierce made four of 11 shots and is 6-for-24 with 20 points in three games against his former team. Ian Desmond Jersey . Now the Minnesota Vikings have set their sights on soccer. Jason Motte Jersey . It was just time for him to make a big play. Nicolas Batum had 20 points and 10 rebounds, Wesley Matthews scored 18 points, and the Trail Blazers overcame poor-shooting nights by two of their best players in a 94-90 victory over the New York Knicks on Wednesday. . - A week after a late-game debacle on defence, the Pittsburgh Steelers showed they can finish.WINNIPEG -- Lirim Hajrullahu knows how important itll be to take advantage of every scoring opportunity when the Winnipeg Blue Bombers host the Saskatchewan Roughriders on Sunday. The rookie kicker has done his part in that department this season, connecting on 22 of his 24 field-goal attempts and having both misses hit the uprights. Watch the game live on TSN1, TSN3, TSN4, TSN5 and TSN GO at 4pm et/1pm pt. His rhythm, though, could be affected in Sundays 11th Banjo Bowl as the Bombers (6-4) have a number of injuries forcing roster changes, including the long-snapper wholl send the ball back to Hajrullahu. Linebacker Ian Wild, who does the long-snapping duties, was injured in Saskatchewans 35-30 Labour Day Classic victory over Winnipeg last weekend and will sit out Sundays sold-out game at Investors Group Field. Hajrullahu said fullbacks Carl Fitzgerald and Michel-Pierre Pontbriand have been zinging the balls back to him close to 100 times in practice this week and hes confident either one can do the job. "Halfway through the season, to have a new snapper is something different, but these guys are professional and I expect them to be just as good on the field," the Western University product said after Fridays practice. And if a few snaps arent perfect, hell deal with them. "If some snaps are different, we always prepare with the drills that if it is a bad snap, what do you do and stuff like that," said Hajrullahu, whos had to do all the kicking the past six games after a hamstring injury to punter Mike Renaud. "I cant have any doubt in my kicks so Im just going to prepare like its any other game." The defending Grey Cup champion Riders (7-2) have won six in a row and are aiming to sweep the season series with the Bombers. The teams have each won five Banjo Bowl games. Winnipeg committed six turnovers that gave the Riders 20 points in their 23-17 victory in Winnipeg on Aug. 7, and then saw the Riders score the winning touchdown last Sunday with 28 seconds left in the game. Bombers head coach Mike OShea isnt satisfied that his team has played Saskatchewan close in this years two clashes. "I want to get these guys. Our players do, too," OShea said. "And we recognize from our film that we cant make the mistakes we made." OShea wouldnt reveal wholl be doing the long-snapping, but its expected Fitzgerald will get the nod as he went into the game last week and had experience at the position for the Saint Marys Huskies. Backup quarterback Brian Brohm remains the holder. "I got thrown in last week and I had to do all the field-goal snaps and I was a little nervous on the first one, but once you do it its just like riding a bike -- you just get back on it and its all right," Fitzgerald said. Carlos Gonzalez Jersey. Winnipeg quarterback Drew Willy injured an ankle in last weeks loss, but he continued playing and has been practising all week and is good to go. The same cant be said for Winnipeg receiver Nick Moore, who injured an ankle and will be replaced by Romby Bryant. Defensive end Kashawn Fraser hurt a knee against the Riders and Jason Vega will take his spot. Saskatchewan is also dealing with injuries in its kicking unit. Punter Josh Bartel (hamstring) and long-snapper Levi Steinhauer (shoulder) will miss Sundays game after injuries in last weekends match. Placekicker Chris Milo will do the field-goal kicking and punting and linebacker Brian Peters is expected to be the long-snapper. Former Bombers placekicker Justin Palardy may come off the practice roster to do kickoffs. Saskatchewan slotback Chris Getzlaf didnt practise Friday because of an undisclosed injury and head coach Corey Chamblin told reporters afterward that he may not suit up, but should be good in the next week or so. "He didnt go today and he was very limited yesterday so theres a good chance he may not play and we have to be prepared for that." Rookie receiver Alex Pierzchalski will fill in and "he has to step up" with his opportunity, Chamblin said. Although the Riders were victorious in their first two games against their arch-rivals, Chamblin said making it three straight isnt easy. "Its always tough. Its tough to beat em one," he said. "But to beat em three, youve just got to know that youre not doing it all at one time, but its one game at a time." Bryant is looking to make good on his next opportunity with the Bombers. Hes played five games this season and has 11 catches for 94 yards and no touchdowns. Bryant watched the game on TV last week and thinks he and his teammates can pick up some tips on how to handle Saskatchewans "solid" defence. "Playing them back-to-back, they probably dont have much time to change stuff up," Bryant said. "You can see tips. It gives everybody tips, even the people that did play last week. Its giving them tips on how they play us and what coverages they do and certain schemes that they got going." Hajrullahu is just hoping the re-jigged kicking unit wont miss a beat. "Every point is going to count," Hajrullahu said. "Theyve beaten us twice and this team really hates losing and we hope to come out on top on Sunday and weve been preparing like we will."
