Arcadia, CA (SportsNetwork. Anthony Gose Jersey .com) - Bayern, trained by Bob Baffert, set the pace and held on down the stretch to capture Saturdays $5 million Breeders Cup Classic to conclude the 31st World Championships at Santa Anita Park. The 1 1/4-mile Classic brought together 14 of the best thoroughbreds including undefeated Eclipse Award winner Shared Belief, Kentucky Derby and Preakness champ California Chrome, Belmont Stakes winner Tonalist and Haskell champ Bayern. Ridden by Martin Garcia, Bayern broke sharply from the gate but came into and appeared to bother 5-2 favorite Shared Belief along with V. E. Day and Moreno. Bayern had the lead from the start and was being pressed by 18-1 longshot Toast of New York and California Chrome, the 4-1 co-second pick. Shared Belief was racing sixth as the field went up the backstretch. Bayern continued on the lead into the stretch with Toast of New York and California Chrome to his outside. The three 3-year-olds drove through the stretch as Shared Belief and jockey Mike Smith tried to join the battle. Owned by Kaleem Shah, Bayern was able to hold off Toast of New York and California Chrome, and win by a nose. California Chrome was a neck back in third. Shared Belief gained some ground to finish fourth. The track stewards posted the Inquiry sign after the finish to determine if Bayern had interfered at the start of the race. No action was taken to change the order of finish. This was missing from my resume, said Baffert after winning the Classic for the first time. Completing the order of finish were co-second pick Tonalist, Candy Boy, Cigar Street, Zivo, Imperative, Footbridge, V. E. Day, Prayer for Relief, Majestic Harbor and Moreno. The time for the Classic was 1:59.88, the fastest time since Ravens Pass won in 2008 when Santa Anita had a synthetic main track. That time was 1:59.27. Bayern earned $2.75 million for the victory. The colt has won six of 10 career starts for $4,389,680. Bayern defeated California Chrome for the second straight race. Bayern won the Pennsylvania Derby on Sept. 20 when Chrome finished sixth. Earlier this year Bafferts horse won the Haskell Invitational and Woody Stephens Stakes. Bayern returned $14.20, $8.00 and $5.20. Toast of New York paid $18.00 and $10.80, and California Chrome paid $5.40 to show. Flaxman Holdings and trainer Chad Brown each had two wins Saturday. Flaxman Holdings registered wins in the $3 million Turf with Main Sequence and the $2 million Mile with Karakontie. Trained by Graham Motion, Main Sequence, the 6-1 third pick in the Turf, held off 3-1 second pick Flintshire to win by a half-length. The 5-year-old gelding, ridden by John Velazquez, made his fourth winning start since coming to America from Europe. He previously won the United Nations, Sword Dancer and Turf Classic Invitational. Stablemate Karakontie won the Mile to become the first horse other than two- time Horse of the Year Wise Dan to claim the race since 2011. Karakontie was bred in Japan and raced in France for trainer Jonathan Pease. Will Venable hit a two-run single in the 12th inning to give the Padres a 6-5 win over the Kansas City Royals on Monday night, their second consecutive victory in their final at-bat. San Diego used Yonder Alonsos slow grounder to score Cameron Maybin with the game-winning run Sunday in the ninth inning of a 4-3 win over Arizona. "Coming on the heels of (Sundays) win, its great," Padres manager Bud Black said. "We are seeing subtle signs. These are the kind of games that can lift guys." Venable singled off Tim Collins (0-2) and over the head of right fielder Lorenzo Cain, driving in Chris Denorfia and Alonso. Denorfia led off the inning with a single off Louis Coleman before Collins came on. After a sacrifice, Alonso reached on a bloop double to left to bring up Venable. For the offensively challenged Padres, the two games may be signs that the team is ready to break out of its season-long funk. San Diego is ranked near or at the bottom in the majors in just about every offensive category. "Bottom line, we just have to get a W," Alonso said. "I dont care how we do it. We have seen it all. This game will do a lot of crazy things on you. (Sunday), we get a game-winner on a bunt swing. (Monday), Will hit a mammoth single. This game will do a lot of things to you. You just have to keep your head up." The Padres rallied back with a pair of homers to tie the game twice and force extra innings. Jedd Gyorko, who is hitting.164, hit a solo homer with one out in the ninth inning off Royals closer Greg Holland to tie the game at 4. It was Hollands first blown save in eight chances. Yasmani Grandal hit a three-run shot off Royals rookie Yordano Ventura in the sixth to tie the score 3-all. "We are a team that doesnt give up, even if we are down by three runs," Alonso said. "We just keep chipping awaay, chipping away and the next thing you know were winning the ball game. Ian Kinsler Jersey. ." Eric Hosmer homered and drove in three runs for Kansas City, which extended its season-high losing streak to five games despite a season-high 16 hits. Cain, who came off the disabled list before the game, had four hits. The Royals grabbed a brief lead in the 12th inning when Mike Moustakas hit an RBI single to score Salvador Perez off Tim Stauffer (1-0). "Any time you lose, its painful, it hurts, especially when you are struggling a bit," Royals manager Ned Yost said. Hosmer hit his first homer of the season, a solo shot off Nick Vincent, to put Kansas City ahead 4-3 in the seventh. "We had plenty of opportunities to put it away," Hosmer said. "Thats just the way things are going right now. This is definitely one of the tougher losses of the season." Ventura had allowed just two hits in five shutout innings before giving up Grandals homer. The right-hander allowed five hits, did not walk a batter and struck out a career-high 10 in six innings. Ventura extended his scoreless innings streak to 18 scoreless innings before Grandals homer. Ventura collected his first major league hit with a sharp single leading off the fifth. Nori Aoki followed with a single and both runners moved up on a fly out. Hosmer grounded a two-run single up the middle for a 3-0 lead. Padres starter Eric Stults had his second tough outing as he lasted just 4 2-3 innings, allowing three runs and 11 hits. The left-hander tied a season high by allowing five runs over 2 2-3 innings -- his shortest start since April 2009 -- in his last start.
