ATLANTA — Sean Newcomb had an occasional rough outing before his near no-hitter Ken Boyer Jersey , but now they have become nearly the norm for the Atlanta Braves left-hander.Since falling one strike short of a no-no against the Los Angeles Dodgers on July 29, Newcomb has allowed 18 runs in 13 1/3 innings during three starts at SunTrust Park.Newcomb will try to get back on track Tuesday night, but it won’t be easy against the Boston Red Sox, who have the best record in the majors.Article continues below ...At least Newcomb (11-7, 3.85 ERA) will have an extra day of rest going into the start against the Red Sox’s Rick Porcello (15-7, 4.27 ERA) in the middle game of the interleague series. The American League East-leading Red Sox (95-44) won the opener 8-2 on Labor Day, but the Braves remained four games ahead of the Philadelphia Phillies in the National League East thanks to the Phillies’ 3-1 loss at Miami. The Braves will employ a six-man rotation the rest of the season and Newcomb could be the chief beneficiary. He owns a 2.73 ERA with five or more days of rest compared to a 5.61 ERA with the regular four days off between starts. “They show you the numbers, and it’s there,” Braves manager Brian Snitker said. “I’m open to all the new things http://www.stlouiscardinalsteamshop.com/authentic-mike-shannon-jersey , the differences. It’s good.”Until his recent struggles, one of worst outings by Newcomb — a Massachusetts native — had been against the Red Sox in Boston during May. The 25-year-old lasted just three innings and gave up three runs and six hits with four walks and four strikeouts.Newcomb had a 6.35 ERA in August, but Porcello wasn’t much better at 5.11 despite starting the month with a one-hit, complete game against the New York Yankees.Porcello, who last won Aug. 14, has allowed 12 runs in 17 innings in his past three starts. The 29-year-old right-hander didn’t face the Braves in Boston during May, but is 2-1 with a 3.32 ERA in three career starts against Atlanta.Counting right fielder Nick Markakis’ time with Baltimore, he had the most success of any Braves hitter against Porcello. Markakis has a .379 batting average in 29 at-bats with a home run.Porcello has won both of his interleague starts this season, posting a 2.08 ERA while defeating Washington and Philadelphia. He has faced National League teams 39 times with Detroit and Boston Whitey Herzog Jersey , going 20-8 with a 4.13 ERA. Newcomb hasn’t fared well against the American League. He is 1-3 with a 7.62 ERA in five interleague starts in 2018 and one last year as a rookie, the lone victory coming this season versus Tampa Bay. Porcello has fared better on the road than at home this season, going 9-3 with a 3.88 ERA compared with 6-4 with a 4.74 ERA at Fenway Park.Newcomb is 7-3 with a 3.12 ERA on the road this season and 4-4 with a 4.63 ERA at home.Third baseman Rafael Devers, on the disabled list since Aug. 17 with a left hamstring strain, will join the Red Sox on Tuesday after playing six rehab games with Triple-A Pawtucket and hitting a homer on Saturday. The Red Sox will also promote veteran second baseman Brandon Phillips, who signed a minor league deal with the team in July and hit .302 in 38 games for Pawtucket. “He had plenty of opt-outs and decided to stay with the team,” Boston manager Joey Cora said of the 37-year-old Phillips, a three-time All-Star with Cincinnati. ” … He wants to be part of this. I think he can contribute. He’s a guy who can hit against lefties.” PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The Philadelphia Phillies acquired veteran slugger Jose Bautista from the New York Mets on Tuesday for a player to be named or cash.Bautista has batted .196 with 11 homers and 42 RBIs for the Braves and Mets this season. The Phillies entered Tuesday night’s game against Washington 3½ games behind first-place Atlanta in the NL East.A six-time All-Star for Toronto from 2010-15, the 37-year-old Bautista has 342 career homers. The right-handed hitter is expected to come off the bench for the Phillies and was going to be available to play against the Nationals. He has started in the outfield http://www.stlouiscardinalsteamshop.com/authentic-vince-coleman-jersey , third base and first base this season.“He’s going to be a veteran presence in the dugout and in the clubhouse,” Phillies manager Gabe Kapler said. “A major part of his role (is) how intelligent he is. He sees the game differently than anyone we have on our roster right now. He’s very good at picking up tells and figuring out which of our pitchers and opposing pitchers are tipping, and he’s going to share that with our clubhouse.”Philadelphia has been active, acquiring infielder Asdrubal Cabrera and two-time All-Star catcher Wilson Ramos last month, then first baseman Justin Bour and lefty reliever Luis Avilan in August.Right-hander Mark Leiter Jr. was designated for assignment to clear room on the 40-man roster for Bautista and catcher Andrew Knapp was optioned to Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Bautista joins his third NL East team this year. Philadelphia will be his eighth club overall in 15 major league seasons.“He came to us at a time where we had some injuries and needed some stability and I think he not only provided that but did a lot more,” Mets assistant general manager John Ricco said on a conference call. “This trade was really less about the return we got and more about a couple of other aspects.“One, it allows us to clear out some playing time for some of our other younger guys,” Ricco added. “The second part, I think Orlando Cepeda Jersey , was about doing the right thing by Jose. You know, he’s a veteran player who came to us and, as I said, did a nice job both on and off the field. By being able to move him to a contender, albeit one in our division, but to a contender, it allows Jose a chance to participate in a pennant race and ultimately chase a World Series ring.”To fill Bautista’s roster spot, the fourth-place Mets planned to reinstate outfielder Brandon Nimmo from the 10-day disabled list before Tuesday night’s game in Chicago against the Cubs. Nimmo had been sidelined by a bruised left index finger.
Chris Sale is all set to start Game 1 at Fenway Park. If the Boston Red Sox later need him for middle relief http://www.dodgersfanproshop.com/authentic-manny-machado-jersey , he’s ready. Or a setup spot, sure.“I mean, it’s postseason baseball. You have to be prepared for anything,” the All-Star lefty said.Especially when it comes to pitching, particularly after seeing the likes of Justin Verlander, Clayton Kershaw, Max Scherzer and other All-Star aces working in unusual roles during recent Octobers.Because as managers’ moves this month have proven — some worked, some didn’t — the winning strategy might be getting the best guy on the mound at the key moment, no matter when that comes.“That’s what it is. You’re using your team’s talents the best way you can to win games,” Milwaukee manager Craig Counsell said Thursday, a day before the Brewers host the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL Championship Series.Sale and the Red Sox take on the Houston Astros in the ALCS beginning Saturday night.Relievers have accounted for 48.8 percent of innings in the playoffs so far, topping last year’s record of 46.5 percent for the whole postseason. By comparison, five years ago in 2013, relievers threw 35.7 percent of postseason innings. But the remaining teams haven’t been as quick to the bullpen as the trend might suggest. The World Series champion Astros and Los Angeles are bucking the relief revolution movement Logan Forsythe Jersey , with the Dodgers at 30 percent bullpen usage and Houston at 36. Interestingly, those ‘pens are also 1-2 in lowest ERA this postseason with marks under 1.00.Kershaw will start the NLCS opener for the Dodgers. He threw four scoreless innings in middle relief in Game 7 of the World Series last year, and earned his only big league save in the clinching game of the 2016 playoffs against Washington. As for letting bullpens handle a bulk of the load, “If it works, it’s great,” he said Thursday.“I’m kind of a traditionalist when it comes to baseball. But when it comes down the postseason, you’ve got to win games,” Kershaw said. “It’s probably tough to sustain for a full season … but definitely makes sense for a postseason.”Even when teams have gone to the bullpen, it hasn’t necessarily been for a traditional reliever. The Red Sox bullpen was seen as a potential weakness this October, so rookie manager Alex Cora didn’t hesitate to use Sale — who started Game 1 of the ALDS — for the eighth inning this week, trying to finish off New York at Yankee Stadium.“He was in the bullpen, but it was kind of like his day. Everybody was on board. I even shouted to the dugout, ‘Hey, we’re all in! He’s coming in http://www.dodgersfanproshop.com/authentic-mark-lowe-jersey ,'” Cora said.Cora also employed former Cy Young Award winner Rick Porcello to start and relieve against the Yankees. The Brewers are the only team among the final four to use relievers for more outs than starters. At a time when more teams are using relievers to start for an inning or two, the Brewers went that way in their NL Division Series opener against Colorado. Reliever Brandon Woodruff began with three hitless innings.“Look, it’s no secret that we’re going to use our pitching a little differently than traditionally, than the traditionalists would like,” Counsell said.“We know we’ve got a lot of guys, the depth of our staff is what is the most meaningful thing for me when we kind of figure out how we do this,” he said.Cora was Houston’s bench coach last year when Astros manager AJ Hinch mixed and matched. Verlander and Sale started against each other in Game 1 of the ALDS, then worked opposite each other as relievers in Game 4.In Game 7 of the ALCS versus the Yankees, Charlie Morton started for the Astros with five shutout innings and Lance McCullers Jr. finished with four shutout frames. In Game 7 of the World Series at Dodger Stadium, McCullers started and was pulled in the third. Morton finished with four strong innings, while Verlander and former Cy Young Award winner Dallas Keuchel were loose in the Houston bullpen.Morton and Keuchel both threw simulated games Thursday, prompting a question about whether either could relieve in the first two games at Boston. Verlander and Gerrit Cole will start those matchups.“I know that the days of creativity and how pitchers are being used and how I used our rotation last year is probably why you’re asking the question,” Hinch said.“I think given the agony that we’re going through in these bullpen decisions and the options that we have in the ‘pen and the performance of our ‘pen and the depth of ‘pen, I see it less likely than ever initially in this series for me having to get that creative with our starters Kenta Maeda Jersey ,” he said.Counsell played for the Arizona Diamondbacks when they won the 2001 World Series. Imposing aces Randy Johnson and Curt Schilling started five times in the seven-game win over the Yankees, with Johnson also working once in relief.“I’m not trying to — we’re not trying to eliminate the need for great starting pitching,” Counsell said. “I mean, Randy Johnson would be probably first in my draft list. If you could pick a player for me to take in the series, I’d say him in a heartbeat.”“It would be nice to have him. Our team’s different, you know, and so we’re going to try to — and we’re trying to figure out what’s the best way for us to put together a tough 27 outs and make it tough on them and get those outs as fast as we can,” he said. “And so we’re considering a different way to put that puzzle together.” KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — A little bunt by Alcides Escobar paid off big for the Kansas City Royals.White Sox reliever Jeanmar Gomez threw away Escobar’s bunt in the 10th inning Monday night, giving the Royals a 4-3 win over Chicago.Brian Goodwin led off the Kansas City 10th with a sharp double. Escobar followed with a sacrifice and Gomez (0-2) made a wild toss over third baseman Yolmer Sanchez, letting the speedy Goodwin score easily.“Goodwin is a good runner, and he was safe anyway,” Escobar said. “If (Gomez) made a good throw, he was safe anyway.”“I knew I needed to move the runner to third base Matt Kemp Jersey , and I made a good bunt. The pitcher went to third base, and, game over.”White Sox manager Rich Renteria wasn’t so sure Goodwin would have been safe with a good throw.“It looked like he recognized the play was available to him and he just got a little flustered, probably a little excited and just didn’t make a very good throw,” he said.Jake Newberry (2-0) pitched a perfect top of the 10th to notch the win.Whit Merrifield homered on the first pitch from White Sox starter Lucas Giolito. Ryan O’Hearn hit a solo homer in the sixth that made it 3-all — he connected against Chicago in his big league debut on July 31, and now has 10 home runs in 30 games.“I’m not thinking about numbers or anything like that,” O’Hearn said. “I just go out there every day and try to have quality at-bats. The home runs keep piling up. Hopefully, I’ll keep on going.”Adam Engel and Daniel Palka each homered in the Chicago third against Jakob Junis.“They were throwing me heaters the first AB and start of the second and I think they noticed me diving over the plate a little bit and missing,” Palka said of his drive just inside the foul pole. “I just kind of stayed back on the one I got. It was a pretty good pitch, just right where I was looking.”Jose Abreu, activated from the disabled list prior to the game, had three hits for the White Sox. He was put on the DL on Aug. 22 following surgery for testicular torsion.Junis went eight innings, allowing seven hits. He faced the minimum after giving up Palka’s homer, and has a 2.15 ERA in his last seven starts. He wasn’t fazed by the rough third inning.“We didn’t really change our game plan Rich Hill Jersey ,” Junis said. “We stayed aggressive, kept pounding the strike zone. We got some quick outs that way.”Giolito pitched seven innings for his fifth quality start in his last six outings.Merrifield hit his third leadoff homer this season and the Royals added another run in the second after a couple of unusual plays. With a runner on second, Goodwin hit a slow dribbler up the third base line that appeared to be headed foul, but Sanchez touched the ball in fair territory and resulted in an infield hit. Escobar followed with a blooper to right field, and a run scored while Goodwin was thrown out at second.TRAINER’S ROOMWhite Sox: RHP Nate Jones is close to returning from the 60-day disabled list. He has been on the DL since June 24 with a muscle strain in his arm.Royals: Manager Ned Yost said that RHP Ian Kennedy has only the “normal pitching soreness” following his first appearance since June 23. Kennedy went six innings Sunday in Minnesota. He gave up one run on four hits. … OF Brett Phillips, out since Sept. 5 with a bruised shoulder, took 30 swings off the tee. He said he can swing without pain, but the follow-through causes him to tighten up. There is no timetable for his return.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Max Scherzer is using all his tools to help keep the Nationals‘ playoff hopes alive.Scherzer pitched six scoreless innings, doubled and scored twice as the Nationals beat the Miami Marlins 8-2 on Friday night for his major league-leading 16th win. After throwing seven shutout innings against the Cubs on Sunday only to watch Chicago win on a walk-off grand slam, Scherzer (16-5) left with a 5-0 lead and watched the Nationals thwart a Marlins rally.Scherzer allowed at least one baserunner in four of six innings but worked out of trouble as Washington opened a six-game homestand with little margin for error as it seeks to get back into playoff contention.“They grinded me,” Scherzer said. “There were some spots in the game that could have swung the game the other way, and (Matt) Wieters did a great job behind the plate finding the right pitch to throw at the right time.”Scherzer struck out seven with one walk and is 4-0 with a 1.13 ERA over his last six starts.Ryan Zimmerman and Wieters homered, and Bryce Harper and Adam Eaton had three hits each for Washington, which has won two straight after losing seven of its previous nine.Scherzer, who also reached on a fielders’ choice, has hit safely in seven of his last eight starts and is batting .296.“I think biggest thing with Max is in big pressure situations … he has the ability to put the ball in play to where you don’t have that kind of strikeout sitting in the nine hole,” Wieters said.Austin Dean homered for his first career hit for the Marlins, who have lost six straight. Miami made two errors and Harper took advantage of center fielder Magneuris Sierra’s tentative play to turn a single into a double.“We should have some pride in what we’re doing out there and I think we’ve showed that through the course of the season for the most part, but here in the recent days it’s just unacceptable in what we’re watching,” Marlins manager Don Mattingly said.Miami’s Dan Straily (4-6) allowed five runs on nine hits in six innings.Mattingly was ejected in the fourth inning for arguing balls and strikes after Derek Dietrich was called out on a 3-2 pitch that appeared to be outside. The Nationals went ahead 1-0 in the second on Zimmerman’s 10th home run. BALTIMORE (AP) — Buck Showalter has been fired as manager of the Orioles, who made three playoff appearances under his guidance but this year staggered through the worst season since the team moved to Baltimore in 1954.Showalter confirmed the dismissal Wednesday in a text message to The Associated Press.A three-time AL Manager of the Year, Showalter ranks second on the Orioles’ career list with 669 victories, trailing Earl Weaver. He took over in August 2010 and orchestrated the resurgence of a team that suffered through 14 straight losing seasons.Once hailed for making baseball in Baltimore relevant again, the 62-year-old Showalter is out of a job after a season in which the Orioles finished 47-115, 61 games behind Boston in the AL East. His contract expired at the end of October, and the Orioles opted against a renewal as they continue a major rebuild that began in late July, when they traded stars Manny Machado, Zach Britton Andrelton Simmons Jersey , Jonathan Schoop and Kevin Gausman for minor league prospects. Those deals were made by Dan Duquette, the executive vice president of baseball operations, whose future with the organization is up in the air.Showalter earned AL Manager of the Year honors in 2014 after taking the Orioles to the AL East title and a berth in the Championship Series. He was also named Manager of Year with the Yankees in 1994 and Texas in 2004. His career record is 1,551-1,517, including 669-684 with Baltimore.“I just think ever since he came here, the franchise just gained a little more accountability, gained an edge for some time,” Orioles outfielder Adam Jones said before the final game of the season. “It’s the end of an era. A great manager, a great tenure. I don’t know if he’s going to coach or manage again, but he’s got grandchildren. Go golf. Relax and go sit on the golf course.”With his future in doubt, Showalter appeared undaunted during the final series of the regular season.“You know how good they’ve been to me? I’m not ever going to forget that http://www.angelsfanproshop.com/authentic-yunel-escobar-jersey , regardless of what happens,” he said.Oakland Athletics manager Bob Melvin was asked before his team’s playoff game against the Yankees on Wednesday night whether Showalter was victimized by the trend toward analytics.“I don’t think Buck was a guy that ignored analytics,” Melvin said. “I think it was probably a combination of how they did this year and maybe some relationships.”After the Orioles brought Showalter out of retirement, he offered renewed hope by fashioning a 34-23 finish in 2010 for a team that was 32-73 upon his arrival.Baltimore ended a 14-year playoff drought in 2012, advancing to the AL Division Series following a victory over Texas in the wild-card game. Playoff appearances in 2014 and 2016 followed.Last year, however, the Orioles fell to 75-87 after losing 19 of their final 23 games. Baltimore hoped the addition of starters Alex Cobb and Andrew Cashner would enable the team to be a contender this year, but a horrid start quickly dispelled that notion. The Orioles’ deficit in the AL East reached double digits by April 18 and they were 8-27 on May 8. By the end of July, Baltimore fully entered rebuilding mode, leaving Showalter with the dubious distinction of overseeing a team that finished with the poorest record in the majors and one that surpassed the 1939 St. Louis Browns for most losses in franchise history.Showalter never offered an excuse. He just grinded forward, working to prepare the team for 2019 even though he knew he might not be around to follow through. At the outset of a season-ending series against Houston, Showalter was asked if he was thinking these might be his final days in the Baltimore dugout.“We all have some private thoughts and emotions about that Martin Maldonado Jersey , but I don’t think it serves the organization well for me to be worried about that right now,” he said. “We’ve got some things to do these last four games that need to get done.”Showalter has a reputation as a no-nonsense manager, but his players appreciated his baseball knowledge and skill at handling a team. He made a point of talking to each of them on a regular basis, almost always offering encouragement.“He gave me a chance,” said catcher Caleb Joseph, who played six-plus years in the minors before arriving in Baltimore. “He believed in me in 2014, ran me out there and gave me a chance to be part of a championship team. He’s really vouched for me ever since. I owe a lot to Buck and his loyalty. He’s been a main figure here for a long time.”Sensing the end was near for the only big league manager he had every played for, first baseman Trey Mancini said: “It’s been an absolute honor to play for Buck. He’s been incredible.”
Tom Szczerbowski/Getty ImagesMLB teams can find themselves desperate prior to the non-waiver trade deadline for numerous reasons.Perhaps a contending team is in the midst of a slump and needs someone to fill a gap. All statistics accurate through Sunday and via FanGraphs and Baseball Reference unless otherwise noted.Milwaukee Brewers1 of 5Dylan Buell/Getty ImagesAfter a 1-8 stretch capped by an 11-2 home loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers on Sunday, the Milwaukee Brewers' season is on the brink. Granted, the Brew Crew occupy one of the two National League wild-card spots, but that could change quickly.First, the NL is jam-packed. Through Sunday, eight teams were within 5.5 games of each other for the league's two play-in berths.Second, the Brewers' schedule is brutal from late July through mid-August, starting with an eight-game West Coast swing to the first-place Dodgers and San Francisco Giants, who are 31-19 at home.Milwaukee also has road series versus the Atlanta Braves and Chicago Cubs, both of whom are in the thick of the playoff race. The Brewers need to make a move if they want to stay afloat. Of note, Milwaukee may want to upgrade at second base: Four Brewers have played at least 12 games there this year, and none of them are managing better than a .693 OPS (per Baseball Prospectus, the average OPS at second base is .715).Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports and The Athletic connected the Brewers with the Minnesota Twins' Brian Dozier (16 home runs, .724 OPS), and Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reported they are in on the New York Mets' Asdrubal Cabrera (17 home runs, .820 OPS). Either player would add pop to the lineup. The question is which players the Brewers could make available in a deal for a veteran. Per Brad Ford of Brew Crew Ball, a group of second-tier prospects are "most likely to headline a trade for any plus rental or mid-grade player with control. Prospects falling into this category include Lucas Erceg, Luis Ortiz, Brett Phillips, Tristen Lutz, Corey Ray and Jacob Nottingham."Dozier and Cabrera would be rentals (both are free agents after this season), and Minnesota or New York could get a great return if a few of the prospects in that aforementioned group are made available. Of note, third baseman Erceg is the third-ranked prospect in the Brewers' system, per MLB.com, and has a stellar 70 arm grade. Ortiz is a 22-year-old right-hander with 58 strikeouts in 57 innings in Double-A, and the 19-year-old Lutz has a .763 OPS in Single-A.New York Yankees2 of 5Elsa/Getty ImagesIt may seem odd to place the New York Yankees here, especially considering they had the game's second-best win-loss record entering Monday. However Dalton Pompey Jersey , the Boston Red Sox reside in the same division, and they've won 14 of their last 16 games and 42 of their last 59 for a majors-best 70-31 mark. The Sox don't look like they will slow down any time soon. That leaves the Yankees in a bind, as it's conceivable an excellent regular season will result in a one-game wild-card playoff. New York wants to avoid that situation, but if the Yanks can't find any starting pitching at the deadline, it seems inevitable.Luis Severino has been the only consistent Yankees starter this year. CC Sabathia has a 3.51 ERA, but FanGraphs notes he has a 4.52 xFIP, which means regression could be on the way.Promising southpaw Jordan Montgomery is out for the season after Tommy John surgery, Domingo German was sent back to Triple-A after struggling, Masahiro Tanaka is giving up too many home runs (18 in 83.1 innings), and Sonny Gray simply hasn't gotten it done (5.34 ERA in 19 starts). Those aforementioned pitchers can be lights-out if they're in top form, but that hasn't been the case for anyone listed minus Severino. Simply put, the Yankees need to add a starter to shore up the rotation. While Jack Curry of YES Network reported New York's elite prospects (e.g., left-handed starting pitcher Justus Sheffield and outfielder Clint Frazier) are untouchable, its farm system is stacked with talent. Other teams could tap into that depth.Of note, 15 of the Yankees' 20 top prospects are right-handed pitchers, so perhaps they will be willing to part with some of that talent to obtain a major league-ready starter.Right-handed pitcher Chance Adams is arguably the best of the bunch. He has a plus fastball and slider and ranks as the fourth-best prospect in the Yankees' system, per MLB.com. Though his 4.89 ERA in Triple-A isn't ideal, he's struck out 87 batters in 84.2 innings. Outfielder Billy McKinney, who has a .796 OPS in Triple-A, could also be involved in a trade.New York Mets3 of 5Jim McIsaac/Getty ImagesThough the New York Mets aren't the worst team in baseball, they may be in the worst spot.Unlike more than half of MLB's 30 teams, they aren't within striking distance of the postseason. If their farm system was stacked with top talent and the team was a few years from contending, that would be fine, but that isn't the case. Of note, Sam Dykstra of MiLB.com ranked the Mets' farm system 26th prior to the season. It also doesn't help that the Mets reside in a city with a media market that will treat you like a king if you're great but kick you when you're down. Also, the fanbase has become somewhat apathetic, as the team ranks ninth out of the 15 NL teams in average attendance. The Mets are desperate in the sense that it seems like they have to do something given the circumstances. The trade of closer Jeurys Familia to the Oakland Athletics seems like a move the Mets felt they had to make http://www.bluejaysfanproshop.com/authentic-roberto-osuna-jersey , and the A's pulled off a heist.Familia is a proven closer with 17 saves and a 2.74 ERA this year. In return, New York received Will Toffey, a 23-year-old third baseman who is hitting .244 in High-A, and Bobby Wahl, a 26-year-old reliever who has made just seven relief appearances in the bigs (4.70 ERA in 2017). Oakland also gave the Mets international bonus pool money.Toffey and Wahl could be late bloomers who play key roles for the Mets someday, but on the surface, the A's won the deal. Could another team take New York for a ride? That seems like a possibility given the Familia return, and it wouldn't be surprising if another team offered less-than-equal value in exchange for another Mets veteran.Baltimore Orioles4 of 5Scott Taetsch/Getty ImagesThe Orioles' season has been a disaster, as the team sports an MLB-worst 28-72 record. The Machado deal kicked off a rebuild, and the O's aren't done.Baltimore needs to trade anyone it can before the deadline. Contending teams are desperate for arms and position players, so the window is now for the Orioles to restock their farm system. They should be able to do so based on recent reports. For example, Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com noted at least seven teams are in the mix for left-handed reliever Zach Britton. He also noted the Orioles want to increase the pace of the talks.Elsewhere, Rosenthal reported the Colorado Rockies are looking into Orioles starters Dylan Bundy and Kevin Gausman, and Roch Kubatko of MASN said those pitchers plus second baseman Jonathan Schoop are coveted by at least a couple of teams.Furthermore, Britton will be a free agent this offseason, so the Orioles would risk losing him for nothing if they don't deal him now. Baltimore needs to act fast to secure the best packages.A fire sale seems inevitable, but the issue is the Orioles may not have a ton of leverage outside a potential Britton deal. Teams aren't knocking down the door for Baltimore's other free agents-to-be (e.g., Adam Jones, Brad Brach), and the clock is ticking toward the deadline, so the O's may be forced to sell for less value than they desire.Colorado Rockies and Arizona Diamondbacks5 of 5Christian Petersen/Getty ImagesThe Arizona Diamondbacks and Colorado Rockies are lumped together because they are in similar situations. With Machado a Dodger, L.A. is the clear favorite to win the National League West. FanGraphs gives the Dodgers an 84.5 percent chance to win the division, with the D-backs (9.7 percent) and Rockies (4.3 percent) far behind. All three teams are within two games, but L.A. is in the midst of a 39-18 stretch. Arizona and Colorado need to make moves if they are to have a shot at the division (or even the wild card). The Diamondbacks are 23rd in team OPS (.704), and that's the worst mark of any team with a winning record. They need more pop to contend down the stretch, which is why they are reportedly after Cabrera, per Feinsand. The Rockies need bullpen help Roberto Alomar Jersey , as they rank third-worst with a 5.17 relievers' ERA. As noted before, Britton is the most sought-after reliever on the trade market. A lot of teams are inquiring about him, including the Rockies, per Jon Heyman of Fancred, so Colorado may have to go over the top in a Britton deal. The Diamondbacks and Rockies can't afford to stand pat, which is why they may make splashes prior to July 31.Jason Catania of MLB.com noted Arizona prospect Jon Duplantier, a 24-year-old right-hander ranked 59th on MLB.com's top 100 prospects list, could be on the move. He missed nearly two months with biceps tendinitis but made his return Sunday, throwing three shutout innings with five strikeouts in the Arizona League. When healthy, Duplantier has excelled to the tune of a 2.52 ERA in seven starts in Double-A. Jon Morosi of MLB Network and Fox Sports reported the O's were interested in Duplantier, and that could be a starting point in a Britton deal.As for the Rockies, Mark Kiszla of the Denver Post explained why this could be a crucial deadline for the team in a mailbag: "I've believed since early this month that general manager Jeff Bridich has no choice except to be a buyer at the trade deadline, because this could be the last best chance to get [four-time All-Star third baseman Nolan Arenado] to the playoffs and have any chance to convince him Colorado is the place he wants to play long term."The 27-year-old Arenado, who has 25 home runs, 72 RBI and a .985 OPS, will be a free agent in 2020. If Colorado doesn't position itself as a playoff-contending team this year, it may give its star an incentive to find a better chance to win. Ezra Shaw/Getty ImagesThe Boston Red Sox won their fourth World Series in the past 15 years as they defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers 5-1 on Sunday night to take the Fall Classic in five games. The baseball world's focus now turns to 2019 and a wild hot-stove season highlighted by free agents Manny Machado and Bryce Harper. There should be a lot of offseason overhauling as 29 teams look to take down the Red Sox, but what are the chances we'll see the same World Series matchup again next season? We'll take a quick look below and make some early predictions.Boston Red SoxDon't expect too many changes in Boston, as much of the team is under contract through 2019. The biggest free-agent names are out of the postseason bullpen, as closer Craig Kimbrel and right-handed flamethrowers Joe Kelly and Nathan Eovaldi can walk. First baseman Steve Pearce and second baseman Ian Kinsler may also be on the move. While it's possible a few players parlay their postseason appearances into big paydays that the Red Sox aren't willing to match, Boston's core is still intact.Ace Chris Sale will be back, and left-hander David Price can opt in for 2019 for $31 million if he so chooses. Rick Porcello should take the mound once again for Boston, so the team's top three starters should be back. The batting lineup鈥攕pecifically an excellent outfield鈥攊s what makes this team tick, however, and most of those players will be back. Boston will have a young 26-and-under core leading into 2019 led by likely American League MVP Mookie Betts, shortstop Xander Bogaerts, third baseman Rafael Devers and left fielder Andrew Benintendi. The team will also welcome back defensive wizard (and clutch slugger) Jackie Bradley Jr. and designated hitter J.D. Martinez http://www.bluejaysfanproshop.com/authentic-paul-molitor-jersey , who led the team in home runs (43) and runs batted in (130).As long as Boston figures out a good plan for its bullpen with three key free agents potentially leaving, the Red Sox should enjoy another fantastic season.Their chief competition is the New York Yankees and Houston Astros. The Red Sox and Yankees have easier 2019 schedules simply because they get to play the Baltimore Orioles 19 times each. The O's won just 45 games last year and are in the midst of a significant rebuild. The Toronto Blue Jays are tearing things down as well, so the two AL East powerhouses should have an advantage so long as the pesky Tampa Bay Rays don't spoil the party (which isn't out of the realm of possibility). But the Yankees' problem is that it doesn't have as strong of a starting pitching staff as Boston's, as evidenced in the American League Division Series. Chris Sale gets the edge over Luis Severino in the battle of the aces, and the Yankees' best pitcher down the stretch (J.A. Happ) is a free agent who could head elsewhere.Of course, plenty will happen between now and next October, but right now, the Sox look like favorites to win the American League, with the 103-win Astros not far behind. The guess here is an American League Championship Series grudge match next year, with the Red Sox winning a much closer battle.Way-too-early prediction: a return trip to World SeriesLos Angeles DodgersThe Los Angeles Dodgers have significant question marks heading into the offseason, which makes it difficult to back them as 2019 National League pennant winners right now.The biggest one is the status of left-hander Clayton Kershaw, who can opt out of his contract and become a free agent. If he does so and leaves town, then the L.A. starting rotation loses its anchor. Kershaw has gone 148-64 in his last 10 seasons with a 2.29 ERA and 9.8 strikeouts per nine innings. Although his playoff struggles are well-documented, he's still been the best pitcher in the game over the last 10 years hands down. Losing him would be a tremendous loss.Kershaw could certainly return, and the team should welcome back a few solid starters including young right-hander Walker Buehler, veteran left-hander Rich Hill and 2017 All-Starsouthpaw Alex Wood. However, left-hander Hyu-Jin Ryu is a free agent and could head elsewhere. The Dodgers are known for their league-best lineup depth and should retain that into next year, but Machado may be a half-season rental if he chooses to go elsewhere in free agency. He smacked 37 home runs and drove in 107 runners as a member of the Baltimore Orioles and Dodgers. He was L.A.'s best slugger and can play shortstop and third base.L.A.'s other problem is that a few NL teams could be on the rise. The Atlanta Braves are well ahead of their rebuilding schedule and surprisingly won the NL East. They lost to L.A. in four NLDS games but could make another run toward the World Series with a fantastic lineup, led by future superstar Ronald Acuna and first baseman Freddie Freeman.Keep an eye out for the Philadelphia Phillies, who were strong for most of the season before wilting. However, they were the fourth-youngest team in baseball and have a bona fide ace in right-hander Aaron Nola. The Phils should also be active in free agency this season, per Matt Breen of Philly.com, and Machado or Harper have been mentioned as possibilities.Couple that with stout teams looking to continue playoff runs (e.g. the Chicago Cubs, Milwaukee Brewers and Colorado Rockies) and senior-circuit sides who could have resurgent years (e.g. the St. Louis Cardinals and New York Mets), and the NL could be a fight to the finish. The competition may be too strong for L.A.Way-too-earlyprediction: a playoff trip, but no World Series
WASHINGTON (AP) — Philadelphia Phillies manager Gabe Kapler obviously has a rooting interest. Still Blake Treinen Jersey , if it were his call, Aaron Nola would win this year’s NL Cy Young Award.“Just the dependability, the consistency, the creativity,” Kapler said. “The numbers. The numbers speak for themselves.”All of it was on display Thursday as Nola outdueled Max Scherzer in a meeting of All-Star aces, Odubel Herrera hit a two-run homer in the seventh inning and Philadelphia defeated the Washington Nationals 2-0.Nola (15-3) was masterful in his matchup with the three-time Cy Young Award winner, allowing five hits and one walk. He escaped his biggest jam with his final pitch, striking out Bryce Harper with runners on first and second to end the eighth.“That was a tough battle,” Nola said. “I got behind in the count right there and a couple curveballs kind of slipped out of my hand a little bit. But I felt confident in my fastball to place it where I needed to.”Nola struck out nine and has a 2.13 ERA — the exact same ERA as Scherzer. Along with Mets star Jacob deGrom, they are considered the top candidates for the NL Cy Young this season.Playoff-contending Philadelphia avoided its first five-game losing streak of the season and salvaged the finale of the three-game series.“I think there’s a lot of pitchers around the league who hitters tend to get more comfortable (with),” Kapler said. “It seems like hitters get less comfortable every time they face Aaron Nola. Right when we needed him most, right when we needed him to step up, he really just put the team on his shoulders and carried us today.”Scherzer (16-6) was nearly as good in the first matchup of starters with at least 150 innings and a sub-2.25 ERA since St. Louis’ John Tudor faced Mets ace Dwight Gooden on Sept. 11, 1985. Scherzer gave up two hits in seven innings and struck out 10, increasing his major league-leading total to 244.Scherzer held the Phillies hitless until the fifth, when Jorge Alfaro’s grounder took a hop and skipped past shortstop Trea Turner. There was a smattering of boos when the official scoring of a single was posted on the scoreboard. The Phillies only other hit off Scherzer came in the seventh. After Maikel Franco’s one-out walk, Herrera launched his 20th home run of the season into the right field seats above the Nationals’ bullpen.“You fall behind enough guys, you fall behind enough counts, eventually you get beat by making a mistake and that’s what happened today http://www.athleticsfanproshop.com/authentic-chris-hatcher-jersey ,” Scherzer said.Herrera is the first Philadelphia center fielder with 20 home runs since Aaron Rowand in 2007.Pat Neshek pitched a perfect ninth for his fourth save.TRAINER’S ROOMPhillies: LHP Luis Avilan reported to the Phillies a day after being acquired from the Chicago White Sox, and C Andrew Knapp was recalled from Triple-A Lehigh Valley. 1B Justin Bour (left oblique strain) and RHP Edubray Ramos (right index finger blister) were both placed on the 10-day disabled list.Nationals: 1B Ryan Zimmerman received a routine rest for a day game after a night game. Zimmerman hit a game-ending home run Wednesday and is hitting .360 with six homers and 17 RBIs in his last 15 games.TOUGH TRADEThursday marked Scherzer’s first start since the Nationals traded 1B Matt Adams and 2B Daniel Murphy on Tuesday. Washington has been at least five games out of first place in the NL East every day since June 30.“It’s frustrating, but it’s also been a frustrating season for us as a whole,” Scherzer said of the deals.BOUNCING BACKWashington reliever Greg Holland struck out the side in the ninth and has not allowed a run in 7 1/3 innings since signing with the Nationals.“He’s looking much better,” manager Dave Martinez said. “I know (pitching coach Derek Lilliquist) tweaked his mechanics a little bit. We talked to him about using his fastball a little bit more and he got up to 95 today, which was nice to see.”UP NEXTPhillies: RHP Jake Arrieta (9-8, 3.25 ERA) starts the opener of a three-game set at Toronto, Philadelphia’s final interleague series of the season.Nationals: LHP Gio Gonzalez (7-10, 4.51), who has given up at least five runs in four of his last six starts, faces the Mets as Washington begins a three-game series in New York. PHOENIX — The Arizona Diamondbacks have been hard-pressed to recover from their last series in Dodger Stadium. The Colorado Rockies may still have time to recover from theirs. The Diamondbacks have lost 14 of 19 to fall six games behind Los Angeles in National League West and five games behind St. Louis for the second wild card spot with nine to play, the trouble starting when they lost three consecutive 3-2 games on the Dodgers’ final at-bat from Aug. 31-Sept. 2. Arizona opened that series in first place in the division and the Rockies were in second.Article continues below ...The Dodgers pulled the same shenanigans on Colorado earlier this week, sweeping a three-game series at Dodger Stadium helped by six homers, including game-deciders in the final two games, to jump over the Rockies and take a 2 1/2-game division lead. The Rockies are 1 1/2 games behind the Cardinals in the wild-card race.“Like I’ve said all along, I think this is going to come down to the end,” manager Bud Black told reporters after Yasiel Puig’s three-run, pinch-hit homer in the seventh inning of a 5-2 victory Wednesday.Rockies right-hander German Marquez (12-10, 3.96 ERA) is scheduled to face Arizona right-hander Zack Greinke (14-10 Sean Manaea Jersey , 3.20) in the first contest of a three-game series at Chase Field on Friday, the third time the two have opposed each other this season. Marquez enters with a streak of 10 straight quality starts. The Rockies took three of four from the Diamondbacks early last week and led the division by 1 1/2 games before losing five of six on their current road trip. Their troubles were compounded by the loss of shortstop Trevor Story, who suffered right elbow inflammation and was forced to leave the first game of the Dodgers’ series.Story became the first shortstop in major league history with 40 doubles, 30 homers and 25 stolen bases when he doubled against the Diamondbacks on Sept. 11. He was expected to participate in baseball activities at the Rockies’ spring training facility in Scottsdale, Ariz., on Thursday and could be available this weekend.Since beating the Diamondbacks 10-3 on Sept. 13, the Rockies have scored nine runs in six games. They were shut out twice in San Francisco and scored two runs in each loss in Los Angeles.“We’ve got to score more runs. We’ve got to get more hits,” Black told reporters in Los Angeles. “This is something we talk about every afternoon when we get to the ballpark. We’ve got to press on.”Arizona manager Torey Lovullo found an unorthodox way to spark his offense Wednesday, when the Diamondbacks used homers from reserves Christian Walker and Chris Owings, and Jeff Mathis‘ first of the season in a 9-0 victory over the Cubs. The victory, which broke a four-game losing streak, came with regulars and top hitters Paul Goldschmidt, David Peralta, A.J. Pollock and Eduardo Escobar on the bench.“You get the understudies in the ball game and they brought a certain energy to the start of the game,” Lovullo said.“Everybody has children here. You look in your kids’ eyes after they studied for a test and they come home, and they don’t do their job and you know that look. You can tell what’s on their mind. I’ve seen a few of those looks from our guys, and I just thought it was time to give them a rest.”Patrick Kivlehan, who made his first start of the season, tied a franchise game record with two triples.“We were just joking around http://www.athleticsfanproshop.com/authentic-boog-powell-jersey , like the Reno Aces were going out there,” Kivlehan said, referring to the Diamondbacks’ Triple-A affiliate.“We tried to keep it simple, not put too much pressure on ourselves. Just go out and have some fun. That would be awesome if it kind of got us going to make a little run here.”Lovullo said he plans to return to the regular lineup Friday.“Obviously it has been a struggle the past couple of weeks, and I feel like (in) the dugout things have been like forced a little bit,” Owings said. “A win like this might give some guys some clear heads going into Friday.”Greinke, who has a 3.20 ERA, will have the first of two possible chances to reach the 15-win plateau for the eighth time in his career Friday. He has won at least 15 games in six of the previous seven seasons, including the year he split between Milwaukee and the Angels in 2012. He won 13 in his first season in Arizona in 2016, when he was on the disabled list for six weeks with an oblique injury.Greinke is 2-5 with a 3.75 ERA in his last nine starts after a streak in which he won seven straight decisions. He has given up a career-high 28 homers, five in his last four starts. The Rockies are a familiar foe — he is 3-0 with a 2.77 ERA in four starts against them this season and is 12-5 with a 3.76 ERA in 29 career appearances (28 starts) Greinke has beaten them twice at Coors Field and once at home this season, when he gave only two hits and struck out a season-high 13 in a 6-1 victory at Chase Field on July 22. He is 6-3 at home this season after going 13-1 at home in 2017.Marquez is 4-2 with a 2.34 ERA during his streak of 10 straight quality starts, a run that began after he gave up eight hits and six runs (five earned) in a no-decision against the Diamondbacks on July 20, a game the Rockies won 11-10. He has faced Arizona five times already this season, going 2-1 with a 4.33 ERA.Marquez has 87 strikeouts and 14 walks during his streak, which covers 69 1/3 innings. He has had his only four double-digit strikeout games this season in the streak, with a season-high 13 against San Diego on Aug. 30. He struck out 11 Diamondbacks in a 13-2 victory at Coors Field on Sept. 10.
ARLINGTON http://www.diamondbacksfanproshop.com/authentic-fernando-rodney-jersey , Texas (AP) — Felix Hernandez briefly looked like the ace he used to be for the Seattle Mariners, even playfully pointing former teammate Adrian Beltre back to the dugout after striking out baseball’s active career hits leader. After getting through the first two innings unscathed Tuesday night, including another entertaining on-field exchange with his friend, the struggles returned for the former AL Cy Young Award winner.Beltre grounded into a double play to end the third, but only after the Texas Rangers had scored four runs that inning to put them ahead to stay. And when Beltre homered to straightaway center in the sixth, it marked the most runs Hernandez has ever given up in his career.“Yeah, I’m frustrated. What can I say? What can I say?” Hernandez said after giving up all the runs in six innings of an 11-4 loss.Hernandez (8-10) is 0-4 in his last five starts for the playoff-contending Mariners. This was the only time in that span he pitched more than five innings.Robinson Chirinos, the No. 7 batter, led off the Texas third with a walk before Willie Calhoun’s single and a bunt hit by No. 9 batter Carlos Tocci loaded the bases. A groundout pushed home a run before Rouged Odor’s two-run double and a tiebreaking single by Elvis Andrus, whose 18-game hitting streak is the longest active in the majors and his career high.“Yeah, I lost my command after the first two innings. Just leaving it in the middle of the plate and making a lot of mistakes,” Hernandez said.“Yeah, got off to a decent start. The walks hurt him a little bit tonight again http://www.metsfanproshop.com/authentic-todd-frazier-jersey , two or three leadoff walks tonight. Those guys came around to score,” manager Scott Servais said. “I thought we got off to a good start in the game, just it turned on us.”Nelson Cruz and Kyle Seager had back-to-back homers to start the second, then Dee Gordon had a leadoff triple an inning later before coming home on a three-bagger by Denard Span for a 3-0 Mariners lead against Bartolo Colon.Colon retired 14 of the last 16 batters he faced after that and became the top-winning pitcher born in Latin America, punctuating his 246th career victory when he reached out and snagged a comeback liner by Gordon for the last out of the seventh. On his sixth try since earning his 245th win on June 30 to match the mark held by Nicaragua’s Dennis Martinez, the portly 45-year-old Rangers right-hander hurler from the Dominican Republic finally had the record to himself.“It was a long journey, but it finally came and it feels good,” Colon said.Beltre, Jurickson Profar and Odor all homered off Hernandez, whose spot in the rotation doesn’t seem certain down the stretch.“Yeah, we’ll see. You have to take a look at where we’re at going forward here,” Servais said. “The next time that spot comes around, we’ll be over in Houston. They’ve also got a good club. We’ve got to give ourselves a chance every time out there to win the ballgame. It’s tough to win. I like the signs of our offense. Our offense is coming around.”Hernandez David Wright Jersey , whose 168 career wins are the most by a Venezuelan-born pitcher, struck out two and walked four. He was hurt by two errors by third baseman Kyle Seager that led to four unearned runs.“I was just bad tonight, didn’t catch them,” Seager said.Profar’s three-run homer made it 8-4 in the fifth right after Seager misplayed Beltre’s two-out grounder.“Errors happen. They are part of the game. You got to keep grinding through it,” Servais said. “Just wasn’t able to make pitches after that. Left the ball up to Profar, which kind of sealed our fate here tonight.”BIG BLASTCruz reached 30 homers for the fourth consecutive season since joining the Mariners. Only Ken Griffey Jr. has more 30-homer seasons in Seattle with six. Alex Rodriguez had four with the Mariners at the start of his big league career.UP NEXTYovani Gallardo, 6-1 since rejoining Texas in mid-June for the first time since 2015, starts the series finale. Mariners lefty Marco Gonzales (12-6) had won five starts in a row with a 1.57 ERA before losing Friday against Toronto. WASHINGTON (AP) — The Washington Nationals need starting pitchers beyond Max Scherzer to excel if they’re going to make a run at the Phillies and Braves in the NL East.Count Tanner Roark in.Matt Wieters homered to back Roark, who went seven innings to win his third straight start, and the Nationals defeated the Cincinnati Reds 2-1 on Sunday. The Nationals took three of four from the Reds and have won eight of 11 overall with the second-place Braves coming to town for a four-game series beginning Tuesday.“They’re fighting, they’re hitting, they’re pitching. They’re doing everything right,” Washington manager Dave Martinez said of his team. “So http://www.metsfanproshop.com/authentic-zack-wheeler-jersey , let’s keep it going.”Roark (6-12) allowed a run on seven singles and got a nice ovation when he made a diving stop on Billy Hamilton’s comebacker to end the seventh.Leading 2-0, Roark allowed four straight singles to open the fourth with Mason William’s hit pulling the Reds within 2-1. Roark then retired Tucker Barnhart on a pop to short, struck out Brandon Dixon and got Castillo on a fly to right.“It’s easy to get in your own head in that spot,” Roark said. “You’ve just got to continue to grind and make your pitches and not give in.”In his last three outings, Roark has allowed two earned runs in 22 innings (0.82 ERA) with 20 strikeouts and a walk after going more than a month-and-a-half without a win.“He’s definitely got confidence right now,” Martinez said. “For him, doing what he’s doing right now, we need that.”Bryce Harper had two hits including an RBI double and is batting .367 since the All-Star break.Kelvin Herrera worked the ninth for his third Washington save. There was no carryover from Saturday night’s game — in which Harper and Joey Votto were hit by pitches — until the seventh when Michael Lorenzen’s fastball sailed behind Washington’s Adam Eaton with two outs and Eaton glared at the mound.Harper started in center Sunday while Votto did not start but was called out on strikes as a pinch hitter to end the game.Cincinnati’s Luis Castillo (6-9) allowed two runs on six hits in 5 1/3 innings. The Braves managed just one hit against Roark after the fourth.“He’s not blowing you away the way Scherzer can,” Reds manager Jim Riggleman said, “but he’s just a guy who knows what he’s doing out there and keeps mixing it up and had us off balance quite a bit during the day.Wieters made it 1-0 in the second inning when he sent a 2-0 Castillo fastball into the second deck in right and Harper’s third-inning double made it 2-0.VOTTO’S TAKEVotto, visibly angry after getting hit by Ryan Madson, didn’t speak with reporters following Saturday’s game. Asked Sunday morning if Madson’s pitch that hit him was intentional, he responded: “I have no idea. My reaction kind of falls in line with that. I reacted. I had no idea at the time when I reacted Mookie Wilson Jersey , and I still don’t, now.”TRAINER’S ROOMReds: Riggleman said Votto’s absence Sunday was not due to getting hit. “Just basically normal aches and pains,” he said. “It’s deep into the season and three games in two days, day game after night game, just kind of at the point today, this would be a day off.” Votto demurred: “I want to play every day. I’d like to play every inning of every game all year long.”Nationals: SS Trea Turner (0 for 9 in Saturday’s doubleheader) was not in in the starting lineup for just the fourth time this season. He was intentionally walked as a pinch hitter in the eighth.UP NEXTReds: RHP Homer Bailey (1-8, 5.87) pitches the opener of the three-game series against the Mets Monday in New York. Kevork Djansezian/Getty ImagesThe Los Angeles Dodgers are one win away from the World Series after their 5-2 win over the Milwaukee Brewers in Game 5.The Brewers tried some trickery at the start of Wednesday's game with starter Wade Miley only facing one batter Youth Jalen Ramsey Jersey , but it didn't matter against Clayton Kershaw. The Dodgers starterbounced back from a rough Game 1 outing to allow only one run allowed in seven innings.Yasiel Puig went 2-for-2 off the bench, including a clutch RBI single in the sixth inning, to help Los Angeles build a 3-2 lead in the National League Championship Series.Craig Counsell's Gamble Gave Brewers Best Chance to Win SeriesWade Miley was the listed starter in Wednesday's game and pitched to the first batter, but that was the end of his night. Brewer manager Craig Counsell pulled Miley in place of Brandon Woodruff, who took over and struck out eight batters in 5.1 inningswhile allowing three runs (two earned).AsKen Rosenthalof Fox Sports noted, this switch was the team's plan all along. Miley will instead pitch Game 6.The move was surprising, but there were several good reasons behind it:Ryan Rosenblatt RyanRosenblattDid the Brewers try to bait the the Dodgers into a righty-heavy lineup and Roberts called their bluff? This series is so smart it鈥檚 dumb.Bill Barnwell billbarnwellPut Craig Counsell in the Hall of Fame for rope-a-doping the DodgersMike Petriello mike_petrielloThis might be a good idea and it might not be, but remember, the alternative here was Wade Miley on short rest. You got to screw with the Dodgers by misleading them about who was starting, and you dont actually have to have Wade Miley on short rest. Well, yeah. Why notLos Angeles didn't go as righty-heavy against the left-handed Miley as it did in Game 1, but David Freese was still in the No. 3 spot in the lineup and was pulled after only one at-bat.Perhaps more importantly, the Brewers' rotation was not lined up well going forward. Not only was Miley starting on three days of rest, butJhoulys Chacin also would have had to go on short rest in Game 6.With the team's lack of starting pitching depth, Game 7 would have been a complete mystery.Suddenly, the Brewers have their top two starters available on full rest in the next two games if needed http://www.jaguarscheapstore.com/jalen-ramsey-jersey-cheap , both of which will be at home.Meanwhile, this was more than just punting one game to get an advantage in the others. Woodruff had been one of the team's best pitchers down the stretch, and he put forth an excellent performance Wednesday. His 5.1 innings were his longest outing of the season.Though things went south the third time through the order, Woodruff gave the Brewers a chance to win and helped prove Counsell right, despite the loss. Clayton Kershaw Still Has More to Prove Before Changing Playoff NarrativeIt's almost undeniable that Kershaw has been the best pitcher in baseball over the past decade. The problem is his reputation has been held back due to his struggles in the playoffs. He has a career 2.39 ERA in the regular season, but he entered Wednesday with a 4.26 mark in the playoffs. That included a 5.24 ERA in 11 appearances in the NLCS.Kershaw did everything he could to show he was past his struggles Wednesday, going seven innings with only one run allowed on three hits. He also struck out nine batters while walking only two.Andy McCullough McCulloughTimesSeven innings of one-run baseball from Clayton Kershaw. Fresh off the worst postseason start of his career, this is one of his best.He was aggressive with his curveball, which was especially impressive:Bleacher Report MLB BR_MLBThat was nasty, Kershaw 馃敟 AFSdoQBYDYAs we have seen so many times throughout his MLB career, Kershaw was the biggest reason the Dodgers came away with a win.On the other hand, we have also seen him pitch well in the playoffs before, including when he shut down the Atlanta Braves in Game 2 of this year's NLDS. The postseason monkey seemed to be off his back, but then he failed to get past the fourth inning in Game 1 of this series.Last year, he followed up a gem in Game 1 of the World Series with a dud in Game 5.When Kershaw is at his best, there is no one better in the game Youth Leonard Fournette Jersey , but the Dodgers need him to be at least close to his best every time out when the stakes are this high. Failing to get out of the fifth inning won't get it done.As well as he pitched against the Brewers on Wednesday, one game in the NLCS will not define his legacy. If the Dodgers advance to World Series, Kershaw will need to produce more quality starts to change his negative playoff narrative. Brewers Won't Reach World Series Unless Christian Yelich Wakes UpHarry How/Getty ImagesChristian Yelich is the favorite to win MVP of the National League, and he is one of the biggest reasons the Brewers are still alive in the playoffs. However, he hasn't looked like himself so far this series. The outfielder finished 0-for-4 in Game 5 with one strikeout, which is the first time he failed to reach base so far this postseason.Although he had been drawing some walks prior to Wednesday, he is now hitting .150 in five games this series with only three singles. His last extra-base hit came in Game 1 of the NLDS when he hit a home run against the Colorado Rockies. Since then, he is just 3-of-25 at the plate in seven games. No one was hotter than Yelich in the second half of the season, and he was especially dominant in the final week. While the Brewers were closing the regular season with eight straight wins, the outfielder had a .458 batting average and an outrageous 1.857 OPS.It's impossible for someone to stay that hot forever, but the Brewers weren't expecting him to go so cold this quickly. While Milwaukee has other quality hitters on the roster, its offense has been nonexistent over the past two games. The Brewers' season may end Friday unless Yelich turns things around in a hurry. What's Next? The series now returns to Milwaukee for Game 6 on Friday. Wade Miley will likely make a real start for the Brewers, while Hyun-Jin Ryu will be available for the Dodgers. Much like the Philadelphia Phillies, Vince Velasquez has struggled since early August. The right-hander will be on the mound Saturday night as the Phillies face the Miami Marlins in the second game of a three-game series in Philadelphia. Velasquez will try to help the Phillies win their first series since Aug. 5 — which also came against the Marlins at Citizens Bank Park.Velasquez (9-11, 4.30 ERA) has a 6.66 ERA and a 1.644 WHIP over his last six starts, and opponents have a .900 OPS against him in that stretch. With 16 games remaining, the Phillies are 7 1/2 games behind the first-place Atlanta Braves in the National League East and five games back of the St. Louis Cardinals in the race for the second NL wild-card spot.Velasquez gave up five runs on seven hits in four-plus innings against the New York Mets last Sunday on a rainy afternoon at Citi Field. It marked the fifth time in six starts that Velasquez has gone four innings or fewer.“I was missing spots kind of the whole game and the conditions got the best of me,” Velasquez told the Delaware County Daily Times after the outing. “I can’t let that happen.”Velasquez has a 2-1 record and a 2.08 ERA in three starts against the Marlins this season. The 26-year-old is 4-2 with a 2.57 ERA and 1.000 WHIP in nine starts against Miami in his career. The Marlins were not sure who would start on Saturday as of Friday night. Manager Don Mattingly said it would likely be a bullpen game with the team playing its sixth contest in five days. The Phillies are hoping their offense from Friday night carries over to Saturday against whichever pitcher the Marlins use.The 14 runs they plated were the most since a 17-5 win over the Pirates on July 6. The Phillies hit five homers on Friday night, including a pair by Aaron Altherr and the 31st of the season by Rhys Hoskins.“Big night for Rhys, and really up and down the lineup, we got contributions,” Phillies manager Gabe Kapler said after Friday’s win. “I thought we had a good offensive approach all night.”Hoskins, who was starting at first base for just the third time this season on Friday, has four homers and seven RBIs in his last six games. He is now hitting .253 with an .868 OPS this season, and Hoskins’ 31 homers tied him for the eighth-most in the National League.Marlins catcher J.T. Realmuto hit his team-leading 21st homer of the season Friday night. KANSAS CITY http://www.giantsfanproshop.com/authentic-dave-dravecky-jersey , Mo. (AP) — Salvador Perez made a young fan’s night by coming through on his promise to hit a home run.A few hours later, a couple kids on the Kansas City Royals hit their own memorable shots.Ryan O’Hearn and Hunter Dozier became the first rookies ever to hit back-to-back home runs to tie and win a game in the ninth inning, lifting the Kansas City Royals over the Cleveland Indians 5-4 on Friday night.O’Hearn and Dozier went deep off closer Cody Allen leading off the ninth, capping a wild finish that followed an odd game featuring a 30-minute delay when a broken water pipe near Kauffman Stadium’s outfield fountains led to flooding on the warning track.“This is an incredible game, fun to be a part of,” Royals rookie right-hander Brad Keller said. “That ninth inning was so wild. I’ve never seen back-to-back homers to walk off a game. It was crazy. It’s fun. Baseball every day is different. That’s what makes it fun.”It started before the game, when six-time All-Star catcher Perez guaranteed a fan in a wheelchair, Colin Couch, that he would hit a home run after meeting him before the game. After Whit Merrifield opened the game with a walk and Alex Gordon followed with a single, Perez made good on the promise by smashing a 454-foot, opposite-field home run — the longest by any Royal this season — into Kauffman Stadium’s iconic right field fountains.“We were talking and I said, ‘I’ll hit a homer for you today, OK?'” Perez said. “He was so happy and all that. After I hit a homer I was looking, he was close to my family in the family (seating), so he was excited.”Yonder Alonso socked a two-out Brandon Crawford Jersey , two-run home run off Brandon Maurer to put Cleveland ahead 4-3 in the eighth. Alonso also went deep in the fourth, marking his fifth career multihomer game and second this season.O’Hearn and Dozier then rescued Kansas City from a sixth straight loss with their homers off Allen. O’Hearn, a rookie first baseman, tied it with a blast into the left field bullpen, and Dozier followed with a wall-scraper to right-center field.“I was just honestly trying to get a fastball to hit,” said Dozier, who has seven home runs. “I wanted to hit it out.”It was the fourth blown save of the season for Allen (4-5), whose ERA climbed to 4.50 in the loss. Wily Peralta (1-0) picked up the victory for the Royals, who were fresh off a four-game sweep at the Tampa Bay Rays.LEAKY SITUATIONThe fountains sprang a leak during the fourth inning. Relievers in the Royals bullpen jumped and yelled to alert game officials and maintenance workers, triggering the stoppage.“I thought I was back in the minor leagues,” Indians manager Terry Francona said. “Nobody knew what was going on.”As maintenance personnel worked to stop the flow of water, more than a dozen grounds crew members armed with squeegees wicked water from the warning track as it poured from under the fence. They also created a sandbag barrier to keep standing water from reaching the outfield grass.Rookie right-hander Brad Keller shrugged off the unusual delay, which came after Yan Gomes‘ two-out double, and struck out Greg Allen to get of the inning with the lead intact.SEE YAHome plate umpire Ramon DeJesus ejected Royals bench coach Dale Sveum during Brantley’s at-bat leading off the eighth inning. Lol at people demanding a reply to why GGG nerfs things when they said literally from the first sentence on this manifesto. like literally, it says "we're not scared to nerf game elements that will powerful and they are harming Path of Exile"
Its just pointless on the point he previously had to produce a Trade manifesto to justify and defend his reasoning because it is really flawed and doesnt make sense at all.
The idea for that defensive Herald of Agony build is usually to layer several defenses as you can, without stopping offense entirely. How is this done? Through the use from the new Herald of Agony minion. Herald of Agony is a fresh Herald launched in 3.4. It has a built-in mechanic where it adds a stack whenever the participant poisons an enemy. As long as you have a minimum of one stack, you should have an immortal minion to address alongside you. The stacks climb to 40, as well as the minion gets stronger for a way many stacks you might have.

It was a successful day.”Morrow revealed his injury was a bone bruise in his right forearm, caused by muscle overuse and a stress reaction from pitching. “Throwing too hard,” he quipped.Morrow’s return figures to be a big boost for the Cubs’ bullpen after Strop strained his left hamstring on Thursday in Washington running to first base.Maddon said he doesn’t think he’ll initially use the right-hander in a save situation. Maddon will monitor Morrow’s pitch counts and doubts the reliever will be able to throw in consecutive games unless the Cubs advance deep into the postseason.TRAINER’S ROOMReds: RHP Michael Lorenzen will start in place of RHP Tyler Mahle (right shoulder fatigue) on Tuesday. Mahle’s status for the remainder of the season is uncertain, manager Jim Riggleman said. The 26-year old Lorenzen hasn’t make a start since September 2015, at the close of his first season with the Reds and in the majors.Cubs: Maddon said OF/IF Kyle Schwarber (back) could be cleared for pinch hitting this weekend and return to the lineup when the Cubs travel to Arizona for a three-game series starting Monday. … Maddon also expects OF Jason Heyward (right hamstring tightness) to return during the series against the Diamondbacks.UP NEXTReds RHP Luis Castillo (9-12 http://www.diamondbacksfanproshop.com/authentic-shelby-miller-jersey , 4.66) is to take the mound against Cubs LHP Jose Quintana (13-9, 3.97) in the series finale on Sunday. WASHINGTON (AP) — Gio Gonzalez ended a personal drought that spanned more than two months — and helped give the Washington Nationals a four-game split with another National League East contender.Gonzalez pitched seven strong innings for his first victory since May 28, leading the Nationals to a 6-3 victory over the Atlanta Braves on Thursday.“I think I was just happy that I got to high-five my teammates for the first time in a while,” Gonzalez said. “For me it was not the pressure, it was just the going out there and doing what I can do to go out there and try and pitch the best I can. Today it finally showed. It finally stepped to the right direction that I wanted.”The Nationals moved within 5 1/2 games of idle NL East leader Philadelphia. The Braves fell a game behind the Phillies.Gonzalez (7-8) snapped a seven-game losing streak and had gone 11 consecutive starts without a victory. He allowed six hits and one walk while striking out three. Nick Markakis‘ solo homer to lead off the second was the lone run he allowed.Atlanta starter Anibal Sanchez pitched two scoreless innings but left after getting hit in the left calf by a grounder from Michael Taylor. Manager Brian Snitker said he was hopeful Sanchez would make his next start.“It looked like Anibal was going to have one of his games starting out,” Snitker said. “He was sharp as can be. We just had a hard time getting ahold of Gio. That was the biggest thing. We couldn’t do anything with him.”Sanchez was replaced by Wes Parsons (0-1), who yielded a bases-loaded walk to Juan Soto and a sacrifice fly by Anthony Rendon as Washington went ahead in the third.Taylor homered to left in the fourth to bump Washington’s lead to 3-1, and Daniel Murphy added an RBI double in the sixth. But Parsons worked five innings in his major league debut, vital for a team that had two starters last only two innings during the series in Washington and heads home to face Milwaukee after a 5-3 road trip.“A winning road trip Chris Owings Jersey , you take that every single time,” said Atlanta first baseman Freddie Freeman, who had three hits. “Sometimes, you have to lose a battle to win the war. I thought what Wes Parsons did was absolutely huge for this ballclub. That’s going to win us games later on with a fresh bullpen.”Ronald Acuna Jr.’s one-out homer in the eighth pulled Atlanta within two runs, but the Nationals got RBIs from Ryan Zimmerman and Mark Reynolds in the bottom of the inning to make it 6-2.Washington went 7-3 on its homestand and begins a seven-game trip to face the Chicago Cubs and St. Louis.“It was big, a big win for us,” manager Dave Martinez said. “Happy flight.”HARPER SCRATCHEDWashington outfielder Bryce Harper was scratched from the lineup with right knee soreness. Atlanta reliever Dan Winkler hit Harper just below the right knee in the seventh inning on Wednesday night. Martinez said X-rays on Harper were negative.DOUBLE DEBUTParsons and Adam McCreery both made their major league debuts for Atlanta, combining to pitch the last six innings. It was the first time the Braves had two pitchers debut in the same game since June 30, 2015 Archie Bradley Jersey , when Jake Brigham and Ryan Kelly did so against Washington.TRAINER’S ROOMBraves: 3B Johan Camargo was out of the starting lineup for the first time since July 14. He struck out as a pinch hitter to end the game. Charlie Culberson filled in at third for Camargo.Nationals: Martinez said RHP Stephen Strasburg (cervical nerve impingement) will throw at least one more bullpen session before the team decides whether he is ready for a minor league rehabilitation start.
